A quick one to congratulate regular client, and good friend, Paul Kirby of Loveland, CO on successfully securing his first NZ double digit brown trout.
On his third trip down here, Paul worked very hard in some trying conditions to bring this fish to his dry.
Now Paul is a guy who puts in the groundwork. He regularly practices his casts, experiments with equipment and leader set ups and each time he arrives his dedication, and groundwork shows.
It all came down to this - a heavy, unrelenting headwind. A big fish swinging in gin clear water, ahead of a 'drag encouraging' riffle.
To counter 'buck fever', Paul picks a prominant target where he wishes his fly to land, taking his focus off the fish, and onto a rock or similar; watching the movements of the fish becomes my job. This is a valuable tip for those unaccustomed to chasing our larger trout, but find nerves get in the way of the perfect 'one time' presentation.
So, targets chosen, line in the air, twas a perfect presentation into the wind. Only one thing now to do.... "STRRRRRIIIIIKKKKEEEE!!!"

Q; What weighs the equivalent of 41 'quarter pounder' hamburgers and pulls like a freight train?
A; Pauls fish!
Good on ya mate!
